The World Bonsai Convention 2017

From the 27-30 April 2017 Saitama City in Japan will host the 8th World Bonsai Convention, promising to be both the finest and largest bonsai convention the world has ever seen… Japan held the first ever World Bonsai convention back in 1989 and since then the convention has been held every four years, in the United States, Korea, Europe and Puerto Rico. With it finally returning to it’s home in Japan, a lot has changed with the Art of Bonsai worldwide, and Japan are wanting to re-affirm to the world that they are still number one when it comes to the art. It’s been a couple of years since I was last in Japan and I cannot wait to be back for this event. Very much looking forward to sharing coverage of the event here for all our friends whom can’t make it!

Nora and I at Kunio Kobayashi’s garden.

The event boasts the best line-up of demonstrators of any event thus far, including; Masahiko Kimura, Hiroshi Takeyama, Kunio Kobayashi, Shinji Suzuki, Minoru Akiyama, Shigeo Isobe, Chikaru Imai, Taiga Urushibata, Kenji Oshima, Isao Omachi, Takashi Sakurai, Masayuji Fujikawa and Mitsuo Matsuda. Additionally there will be international bonsai artists from each region of the World Bonsai Friendship Federation also demonstrating: Werner Bush, Hannes Fritz, Jyoti & Ninkunj Parekh, Zao Quingquan, Mike Siow, Lindsay Bebb, Bjorn Bjorholm and Juan Andrade.

Kimura’s famous ‘Resurrection’ tree.

One of the most exciting aspects of the convention will undoubtably be Kimura’s demonstration, which he has hinted will be something very special (and understandably, the bonsai world has got particularly excited about!). He has also hinted that this may be his final ever public demonstration…! So, a once in a lifetime chance to see the Master in action. Watch the excellent interview by Bonsai Empire with Kimura below, if you haven’t already…

Cannot wait to be back!

Stay tuned for a full post on the festivities!
